The Franklin Mountains Will Humble You

The Franklin Mountains Will Humble You

Largest urban park in the contiguous US — 37 square miles of Chihuahuan Desert rising straight from El Paso's north side. The Ron Coleman Trail is 5.4 miles round trip, 1,600 feet of gain, and it will remind you that the desert doesn't care about your fitness goals.

The first mile is gentle and full of lies. Jackrabbits watch you from the creosote with the silent intensity of critics at a gallery opening. Then the trail tilts upward and El Paso and Juarez open up below you like someone unfolded a map on a kitchen table. Summit view: three states and two countries. Rio Grande threading south, New Mexico mesas to the north, Sierra de Juarez across the border catching the same light from a different nation.

November through March. That's your window. Any other month and the rocks become skillets and the whole experience shifts from "challenging hike" to "potential rescue." Start by seven. Bring twice the water you think you need. Wear real boots. Tell someone where you're going. The desert is gorgeous and completely indifferent to your well-being.
